Holton ST500 "Al Hirt" |

Horn Review: My Al Hirt Special from 1966 was a beauty to see and to hold. The playing was compared to a Vincent Bach ML. 37 a bit disappointing: stuffy, takes a lot of air to let it sound. I wonder if Al Hirt himself was doing his greatest hits on this instruments :)
The vintage Holton trumpets were well made from quality materials; my Al Hirt had no ret rot after 45 years (!) and the valves where reliable as well. More recent Holton trumpets are definitely worse: Don't buy them if you want to have joy more than a few years.....
The bore size is indeed ML, appr. .459"

Yamaha YTR-6310Z |

Horn Review: I bought the horn second hand, carefully mastered the leadpipe and tuning slide for red rot: None!
But at home I discovered red rot spots in the bell just after the first valve as well the surface of the valves started to disintegrate.... I emailed Yamaha but all silence on that front. Not so good....
Anyway, the 6310Z is a real great player, actually better than the 8310Z but I doubt the Shew horns will survive in the long terms.
The sound is great, if you like a big fat sound the 6310Z can be the horn for you, if you want to purchase a horn for the rest of your life better buy a B&S or a vintage Vincent Bach or Schilke etc.

Horn Review: In spite of all bad news about UMI Conn trumpets this horn is a surprise!
Easy to play, a real trumpet sound and made for ages of abuse by unpatient students.
Great value, much better than any Yamaha student horn: the Conn has no red rot after all this years!

Horn Review: I was looking for a new horn after an 18 year hiatus from playing. (I've had the same 1969 Holton T602 that I've been playing since 6th grade.) Wanted an intermediate level horn so I tested a Yamaha 4335, a King Silver Flair and the Eastman 520S. The Eastman easily had the best sound (in my humble opinion), and the best price. Got home and just to confirm that I made the right choice, I played a bit on the Eastman and then on the Holton (which I have taken care of and cleaned regularly even though I haven't played much since college). Could not believe how much the Holton seemed to fight me compared to the Eastman. Not to go on a tangent but the Holton is built like a tank, as are a lot of student horns, and the Holton has... Horn Review: Excellent instrument.. easy to play, easy to bend notes. I use a conn 4 mp and have the hour glass all the way in and it's reasonably bright and definately able to cut through a folk band when pushed and into a mic.. that might sound easy but the guy I leant it to at the time was playing a respectable trumpet before his 2nd valve jammed and not cutting through as much. With the hour glass tuner further out and a deeper mp it can really play mellower and a bit darker. Worth mentioning that the hour glass tuner is rather like what's now called a "tuneable bell" :)
I really like it overall and for the money it's good value.
