I recently picked up a Holton trumpet serial number 42058. The bell shows it was made in Wisconsin while the valve casing was made in Chicago. I'm guessing that this is due to the move of the facility in 1918. I was hoping someone might be able to tell me what the purpose of the dual third valve slide is and what the numbers 001/4 on the middle valve casing mean.

The 001/4 refers to the bore size of the trumpet. In that era, small bore trumpets/cornets were common, and the 00 1/4 marking refers to a small bore, most likely 0.457".

Hope that helps.

I'd measure that ID of 2nd valve. There are O, o1/4, 01/2, 00, 001/4, 001/2 and these are progressively larger 'Holton' measurements with 01/4 being about .457" .:)
