View Full Version : 1916 French Horn Serial Number 37395

While at college, my parents bought an old house and found some french horns in the attic. One of them is a Holton French Horn with the serial number 37395. The case is dry rotted, but the instrument is in playable condition. All slides and valves still move properly, it just needs some polishing and then would be good for use.

I'm just curious as to if anybody has more information on the specifics of this french horn.

I have an image taken with my phone at http://i.imgur.com/lcBbb.jpg

Thanks, looks like a great find. Based upon the serial number I would guess this was made in around the 1916 - 1917 time frame, and I would guess the bell has Chicago as the mfg. location under Frank Holton on the bell. Can you confirm the bell engraving text on the bell. Because Holton at the time was creating trumpets using Piston type valves, they used them also on their early French Horns. Later they switched to Rotary style valves as their French Horns became more professional horns.

Hope you find this information helpful.

Chicago does indeed appear on the bell engraving.
