I'm glad I stumbled on this site! I am the proud recipient of my great-grandfather's "cornet" - a Holton Clarke serial #50142. It's actually in pretty good shape and although I never learned trumpet (I was a flute player) I was able to get a pretty good sounding scale out of it!

It's still got it's case and lots of extra valves, music holder, etc. I think from reading your website that with that serial number, it's dated to around 1921. Is this correct?

Lastly, although I am not interested in selling it, I would like to know the worth (perhaps for insurance purposes).

Thank you so much! :)

p.s. what was the difference between a "cornet" and a trumpet?

Yes, that would be the approx. age of your cornet.

If you scroll down to the bottom of this link, you'll examples of this cornet.

The value is highly dependent on the condition, but would guess somewhere between $500-$750...
