The Holton Loyalist site says that Holton formed his company in Chicago around 1896-1898.

I own a Holton Special trombone with serial number 726. Per Leblanc, the Holton Special Trombone was the first instrument model that Holton manufactured. They tell me that the trombone was manufactured in 1903, which they say was the first year of production, and that the first several were made by others under contract, but that my serial number is high enough that it was likely made by the Holton company.

So how does this jive with the chronology on the loyalist page? Please copy any responses to jimcint@aol.com

you are correct, that serial number would be from the 1903 era...
