My grand-dad had his Holton New Proportion - Serial #27701 - in high school in Texas in 1916. I'm a string guy and don't have a clue whether it's a trumpet or cornet. And, natch, I'm also clueless as to what it may be worth. How do I learn these things?

The mfg. date would have been around 1914-1915, and the bell should have Chicago as the engraving on the bell..

Also a period advertisement of this instrument, from the same time period as 1914-1918.

The value of your instrument is highly dependent on the condition. You can do a search on eBay, Adv. Search, search completed auctions. Would guess a few hundred $.
