  1. Recent Mellowphone purchase

I like to "rescue" old, and vintage brass instruments and turn them into timeless pieces. Recently I acquired a silver Frank Holton & Sons Mellowphone. Etchings say made in Elkhorn, Wis and along the rim it says Avondale Mills, Birmingham, Alabama. It is all intact with beautiful mother of pearl plungers and original mouthpiece. The serial number is: 249232 with the 1st 2 inverted. Can anyone tell me anything about this wonderful piece before I turn it into a lamp?

  2. The instrument would have been most likely built in the 1953 to 1954 timeframe. My guess is the reference to Avondale Mills (http://encyclopediaofalabama.org/fac....jsp?id=h-2141) would have been a company sponsored band.

Here's a reference to the same band in the 1920's http://docsouth.unc.edu/nc/millnews/ill75.html
