Pros: Sound, Intonation
Cons: Valves, Build Quality, Stuffy upper register

I owned an LF1 before Roy started using Getzen valves. The valves on my horn were German made and I hated them. They were noisy, unreliable and sluggish. The horn had a wonderful, warm, smokey sound and excellent intonation, but the build quality was not what I expected from a custom shop. There were gobs of solder on the horn in various places and at least one joint that looked to have a gap due to a lack of solder. The valve slides were next to impossible to pull out, no matter what kind of juice/grease I put on them. The lacquer was very uneven and noticeably smudged in places.

I've played other instruments out of the Lawler shop and thought very highly of them. However, this one experience has turned me off his horns.

Pros: Craftsmanship,sound, intonation
Cons: none

Took delivery of a Lawler built TF ps1 flugelhorn and must say that it is every much the horn I expected it to be. My initial play testing produced a tonal quality ranging from dark and warm to bright and almost trumpet sounding with just a mouthpiece change. The sound can be focused to somewhat diffused depending on the mouthpiece. The valves were smooth and quick right out of the shipping box, and the finish in bright silver is a real beauty to behold. I have nothing but "GOOD" to say about the overall experience of having a horn custom built by Mr. Lawler. Thanks again Roy

Pros: Build Quality, Intonation, Small Bore Size
Cons: None

I picked up a used FL1 from Roy in about 2005. The horn has the Bauerfeind valves and this is the absolute best fluel I have ever played. I came off a 4 valve Getzen and I am absolutely amazed at this horn. I had a little trouble with my 1st valve until I switched to Warburtons PDQ valve oil. Problem solved and I can't imagine ever getting rid of this horn...also it is in scratch gold and is a real beut!
