Description:
AL CASS of Milford, Mass. mouthpiece made for and used by Dizzy Gillespie, Booker Little, Blue Mitchell, Kenny Dorham ,Maynard ferguson, and Roy Eldridge, just to name a few. Each one was hand-made by Mr.Cass and are extreemly comfortable to play. An increase in endurance and range is easily achiveable with these highly sought after and rare mouthpieces.

Pros: Increased endurance, very comfortable, Easy upper register
Cons: Expensive and rare

I bought my 3x2 from Steve Cass, Al's son who is very knowledgable and helpful. I immediately noticed a 50% increase in my endurance and an increase of about 10% in range with this mouthpiece. It is incredibly comfortable and beautifully made. I wont use anything else now (and I have tried them all). If you can find one, buy it!!

Pros: comfort, playability, sound, etc.
Cons: very rare, therefore hard to get!

Well, I got my Al Cass 3X2 on ebay. I've been a fan of Mr. Gillespie and Mr. Eldridge since high school, so I've wanted one of these pieces for years...if for no other reason than they are a piece of history, and I could feel closer to two of my heroes. Holy ___ Batman! When I tried it, I instantly realized the stories and legends were true about Mr. Cass's mouthpieces. I realize I was lucky to pay what I did for mine (low 3 digit). Check 'em out!

Pros: Looks, History, Rim Feel
Cons: Well....

...This is an addendum to an earlier review I did on the 3X2. After playing for a few months on it, it started to feel 'stuffy' to me. So...A mouthpiece is such an individual thing, that I'm loathe to list any cons, so I'll just write what I know. The 3x2, though listed as a 'screamer', is quite deep. After playing on it during a ship contract, I took it in for re-plating. I was told the backbore was so small, no backbore shapers at the shop could fit inside it. This imbalance between the deep cup/tight backbore is why, I'm sure, it felt strange to me. Perhaps Al Cass made it small to allow for custom work...just conjecture. Any way, the piece is fun to have around, and if it works for you: Great! Like most things, some swear by it while others revile it...I'll stick to my Reeves. Thanks!

I've had my Al Cass since the day, when it was new, in the 70's, for 25.00$, including shipping. I love it because it is helpful when my lip is out of shape; but, i use a variety of mouthpieces. I still find it a unique piece.
