Excellent commercial horn - beautiful, exciting sound
|
|
Cons:

You must keep the valves very, very clean!!

This was my first Calicchio trumpet. It was built in Hollywood, CA by the former owner(s) of Calicchio about 4-5 years ago. Although I prefer my Tulsa Calicchio 1sZ/3RL, it was an excellent, professional horn. Excellent resale valve -- always in demand!! If I had the $$$, I'd like to try another Studio 2 (1s2) -- this time built in Tulsa!!

The sound, the sound, the sound!

Too bright for all-around use

The standard for commercial sound. Excellent intonation, free-blowing and pleasure to play! With a heavyweight mouthpiece and heavy valve caps, you can get a passable classical sound but, that's not what this horn was built to do! My 1s/2 is a Hollywood version and I use a Curry 70M mpc. for show work and a Bach 1-1/2C megatone with Curry heavy caps for wedding, quintet, etc. You've got to try one!

I use this horn with a Marcinkewizs #11 mouthpiece in a 6 piece Jazz/Rock and Roll band and I find it the best horn I've ever had. It has got a good dark sound for the quieter music as well as a big, bright sound that cuts right through. It was made in Los Angeles in 1995.

Ultimate Las Vegas Lead Trumpet Sound
|
|
Cons:

None

My Calicchio (Hollywood) 1S/2 is the ultimate Las Vegas type lead trumpet. Above high G it is producing overtones like no other trumpet I have ever played. It is a truly amazing sounding instrument. I own numerous horns that are known for lead trumpet duty in professional settings (Schilke B1, Schilke B6 with berrylium bell, Schilke B7, Schilke X4, Holton ST302-MF Horn, Holton ST200-Bud Brisbois Model, Conn 38B, Flip Oakes Wild Thing). If you want the absolute ultimate lead trumpet, the Calicchio 1S/2 is it. A blow torch. It should be sold in a cage instead of in a case.

Sweetest horn I ever had! Makes you do what you need for the moment. Works great for classical, may be because I ues a 11/4 C? but really opens in the higher register. Can play this horn really mellow and round but can bark and scream when I need! Best whishes / Daniel L

Price increases are making it less of a bargin when it once was!

This is my third Calicchio and second 1s2. My first 1s2 was made in Hollywood while this horn was made by John Duda in Tulsa, OK. My experience suggests that Duda's horns are superior to those that were made in the latter days of the Hollywood shop.
In all honesty, this is every bit the horn my first 1s2 was and then some. Easy to play, accurate slotting/intonation, and a bright, commercial sound. It's never been played in a legit setting but with the right mouthpiece (deeper cup), you could easily darken the sound.
For the price of a common Bach Strad, you can still get a handmade, custom horn that sounds sooooo sweet!! Although they're getting more expensive, price-wise they're still a "sleeper."
Before you jump on a Taylor, Kanstul, Getzen, etc., try a Calicchio - you'll be pleasantly surprised!!

1s7-ML---Great feed back using this horn. Nice fat sound with a lot of pop without being too edgy.

Cons:

Very good all around horn. It may not cut through or as loud as some other makes but it centers well with a good core. It was tuff finding the right mouthpiece but Stork, Purviance and Giardinelli seem to be the best suited.

This is my third Calicchio trumpet and my second 1S2. My first 1S2 was a Hollywood built horn and, although my current 1S2 is a Tulsa horn, it's equal or superior in every way to my first Calicchio. The build quality is great and is obvious once you pick up the horn and start to play. It produces a beautiful, commercial sound that records well and, if played in such a way, can rise above the section.
I bought this horn from Tulsa Band; they have a special relationship with Calicchio and can get you almost any Calicchio you may be interested in. They're great to work with and make sure you're satisfied with your new Calicchio.
In light of the rising cost of most professional trumpets, the Calicchios (starting at about $2100) remain an outstanding bargain. An excellent, handmade horn which is less costly than a mass-produced Bach Strad.
If you need more of an all-around horn try a Calicchio 1S7, however, the 1S2 remain the standard by which commercial/studio horns are measured!! Well worth the wait and cost.

It is hard to find one horn that will give you what you need for both legit and jazz application. The 1s2 in my opinion ways a little heavier on the commercial side of sound quality. However Tulsa put out a 1S2R, that has the 1S bell made of a higher copper content (Rose Brass), and it really made the difference for me! I have owned 3 different 1S2's and though I loved the sound of each one they were a little too bright for my legit gigs. The 1S2R bell made the difference for me, I now have an axe I can use for all applications. The Tulsa Boy's got the right combination for me!!
