Great all-around horn. Aesthetically pleasing, simple and robust like all Schilke horns. Literally fits well into your hand ergonomically- no other horn I've played feels as natural when you hold it.
Nice compact sound that is versatile and responsive. Like most Schilkes, it has a distinctive shimmer on the sound, most likely because of the absence of the usual bracing.
The ML bore and ML bell with a tight flare give it a familiar blow, though their bore sizes are usually a bit larger than most ML horns. Step bore design has great intonation- this horn tunes the best of any horn I've played so far. I can make it dark or really bright, depending on my setup.
Schilke is an excellent company to work with. They overhauled/customized my B5 recently and took all the care in the world to do the best job possible. They are friendly and helpful.
This horn is a good all-rounder, nice clean and compact tone. If you want something a little broader, try a B1 with a larger bell flare.

I bought a B5L with both bells back in 2001 and was immediately in love. This instrument knows literally how to play itself. It will let you know what bad habits you've developed playing other more inferior brand instruments. As these now cost only a few hundred more than a Bach or Yamaha Xeno, they are becoming a better value every year and are unquestionably better made than either of those brands. My only complaint was that the high register was very stuffy with the Beryllium bell. Unfortunately that was also the factor that led me to sell mine in 2003. I now play a Schilke X3L and like it as well in the heavy bell configuration and much more with the heavy bell.

Produces a nice, focused sound. Excellent manufacture quality.
Offers quite some resistance that was too much for me especially in the high register. Switched to B1.

This is a really well built horn and you can tell this when you play it. I noticed I could play REALLY loud with little effort, however it seemed a bit resistant. For me, some intervals were hard to get accurate and even octaves, but this might be because of other factors perhaps with me. Overall, it is a great horn.
