This trumpet has the classic Bach sound -- wonderful mid-range overtones, yet a nice brilliance in the upper register. I was very surprised by the response and how open this trumpet played relative to my Strad and other 180 standard configuration Strads. It does take more air then my current Stradivarius, but I consider this a playing adjustment to get a more flexible instrument. The only negative was the factory prep was not at the level expected for a trumpet this cost -- the silver was not completely polished and the valves needed to be cleaned prior to use as they were sticking badly, perhaps due to left over cleaning compound, but I didn't explore that further in my play test. A good dealer should take care of this for you before the horn is put on the showroom. If not, look elsewhere and buy from a reputible business and definitely play test it first.
Overall, this trumpet has a wonderful sound/response and went from not even being on my shopping list for a new Bb to one of the top few choices (over a 180-37). I would encourage playing before buying to ensure the trumpet is in good working order. ...just because this trumpet is made in Eastlake Ohio (instead of Elkhart) is not a reason to pass this one by, it is a wonderful sounding instrument with a lot of potential as a section, solo or lead trumpet.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this review because I recently had an 8310Z but thought it was junk and now prefer the Bach 182 because it sounds better, even though its not properly finished. I've had to scrub the insides out with solvent cleaner and get excess silver out of the receiver. The warranty card says it's under guarantee for 5 years. So to start with I disliked it but the more I play it (and clean it) the better it gets.
I think if the horn was clean and ready to play on arrival I'd score it ten - only because of that I give it 9. It's a good all round trumpet with noticeably professional center and focus.

I was formerly a clinician and artist for another wonderful trumpet and then about a year and a half ago, Bobby Thorpe from Synergy Brass, Jeff Christiana, product manager for Conn-Selmer trumpets and trombones, were all in Elkhart, Indiana.
Bobby and Jeff kept raving to me about this 182. I had no intention at the time of trying or switching to a new horn. I had always played extra large bore horns, and to my surprise, this thing just felt absolutely effortless to play, had that gorgeous Bach sound, intonation, and it just rang like crazy in the upper register too!
I thought that maybe it is just that one day honeymoon thing, so tried it the next day, and the next, and by that Friday I said, "I must have this trumpet". Every day it just played and sounded so fantastic, had that unique gorgeous Bach sound and was so good in all registers and specifically up high, which for the big band lead stuff I do is absolutely perfect.
Over the years, like a lot of my friends, I always felt like I was trading off that gorgeous core sound to try to find something that would ring just a bit more up high. No trade off here, it sounds absolutely beautiful in all registers and rings like crazy on the high stuff too!
I know I sound really enthusiastic, cause I am, I love this thing!

I kept the 182 horn for a while and then went back to the 8310Z, which sounds and plays better once you take care of the valve alignment and receiver gap. Many more people compliment the tone of the 8310Z than the 182 (actually they complained about its piercing brightness). Why they could not just remake the original Holton T105S with the right pipe I don't know.
